Darrell's Bio

Darrell Roberts has a BA in art history from the University of Northern Iowa as well as a BFA and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Mr. Roberts is represented by Thomas McCormick Gallery, Chicago. Darrell is affiliated with the Hyde Park Art Center.  Chicago's oldest (70years old in 2009) not-for-profit organization that presents innovative exhibitions, primarily work by Chicago-area artists, and educational programs in the visual arts for children and adults. Darrell stays active in the Chicago arts as a professional artist and by attending art exhibitions in the River North Art district, West Loop Art district, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago Cultural Center, Art Institute of Chicago, alternative exhibition spaces among many others. A resident of the North side for 12 years, his studio is located in the Cornelia Arts building and he enjoys traveling all over the city experiencing the many diverse neighborhoods.

Darrell's Questionnaire

Q: Favorite local Chicago artist or performer?

A: Karl Wirsum was a great influence on the development of my own artwork when I was at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has a great teaching mannerism and is one of the Chicago Imagist artists.

Q: Most interesting event of 2010 so far?

A: Music without Borders in Millennium Park was outstanding this summer.

Q: Weirdest/Wildest thing you’ve ever seen on stage or in a gallery/museum?

A: Bruce Nauman's "Clown Torture" video installation in the Modern wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. It is by far the strangest. Mr. Nauman represented the United States in the Venice Biennale this year.

Q: Best performance or exhibition you've ever seen?

A: The Lee Bontecou retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2004.

Q: Favorite summer arts festival?

A: The Boeing Galleries and Burnham Pavilions exhibitions in Millennium Park.
