Aside from a stint in L.A. in her last semester at Columbia College, Katie is a lifelong South Sider. In high school, Katie remembers sneaking up to Belmont Avenue with her friends (and then race home in time for curfew) every chance she got. This was the beginning of Katie's love of discovering unique art-related events happening throughout the city. As a journalism student at Columbia College, she focused on writing about Chicago's music and art scene then was chosen as one of the first journalism students to participate in Columbia's Semester in LA Entertainment Reporting program. Since graduating in May 2009, Katie has been interning with National Public Radio (NPR).
Q: Favorite local Chicago artist or performer?
A: I think that Christa Donner's illustrations and installation art, which focus on elements of science, health and body image, are absolutely amazing.
Q: Most interesting event of 2010 so far?
A:Manifest Urban Arts Festival (I’ll admit my opinion is a little biased since I am a Columbia graduate.)
Q: Weirdest/Wildest thing you’ve ever seen on stage or in a gallery/museum?
A: Though this technically was not meant to be part of the exhibit, the craziest thing that I've ever seen in a museum would have to be a group of Louvre security guards tackling a tourist for taking a picture of the Mona Lisa. Even weirder was that I somehow ended up as her translator.
Q: Best performance or exhibition you've ever seen?
A: The MCA's “Escultura Social: A New Generation of Art from Mexico City' exhibit which showcased Mexico's emerging artists.
Q: Favorite summer arts festival?
A: It would have to be the Renegade Craft Fair. For as much as I love Chicago's art scene, I will always be a crafter at heart.
