Mark Mulroney @ Ebersmoore

Archie Comics - The Depraved Version

Recommended by Ginny Berg

The latest show at Ebersmoore will strike you as unusual, but it’s worth an in-person visit. Artist Mark Mulroney had some very grown-up “fun” with cartoons. You’ll recognize the figures in the art works as characters from the old Archie cartoons; the title of this show refers to Archie’s portly, bald Riverdale High School principal, Mr. Weatherbee. But in Mulroney’s world, Betty, Veronica and Archie are definitely not up to their usual pranks and gags…

Insider Info: The works in this show are graphic, awkward, depraved, and even kind of funny. (I won’t mention the acts and scenes here.) But, when you’ve looked at the whole show, including the “interactive” wooden sculptures on display, and giggled uncomfortably when you couldn’t look away, you’ll have definitely seen something bold and new. Ebersmoore is the little gallery that can, and it’s worth paying attention to the shows they mount. They relocated to the West Loop/Fulton Market at the end of 2009, and the praise keeps coming.  The gallery was even named one of the best 5 new art spaces in Chicago of 2009 by Newcity. The gallery is open 12-6, W-Sa.
