I attended the "Shape-Shifters" exhibit at the now-closed Alfedena Gallery last year and fell in love with the funky, tactile ceramic pieces by artist Sarah Hicks. Now she's part of a two-person show called "Taxonomies" with painter Peter Barrett at Thomas Robertello Gallery. Hicks' work begin with molds of mass-produced domestic and found objects that eventually become "chic tchotchke" sculptures. In conjunction with Barrett's complex geometric paintings, this show is the color overload you've desperately needed after such a gray start to summer.
Insider Info: Thomas Robertello, a former art collector, opened his space a couple years ago. He is a particularly good person to know if you want to start collecting contemporary art. He has works from other Chicago galleries and is a great supporter for his own artists, some of whom are really moving on up in the art world. Photographer Adam Ekberg (who'll definitely be covered here when he has a December show at the gallery) is part of a new exhibition at the MCA.
