Although they’re set near a bayou in Louisana, and have echoes of Afro-Caribbean folklore, The Brother/Sister Plays are much more than stories from an African American community. The stories told here explore the fundamental human truths of love, sexuality, family and community, in an expressionistic and dreamy performance style that is a refreshing change from the straightforward, in-your-face Chicago style of American Buffalo, Killer Joe, and other similar shows currently onstage around the city.
Insider Info: The Brother/Sister Plays are presented in repertory, with In the Red and Brown Water on one evening in rotation with the two shorter plays, The Brothers Size and Marcus, on the other (though for an extra treat, I’d suggest catching the marathon performances on the weekends). If you're going to choose one night, however, choose the latter two - The Brothers Size is one of the most compelling, intense hours of theater I've seen so far this season. The plays can be experienced in any order, although chronologically In the Red or Brown Water comes first, followed by The Brothers Size and then Marcus. Check out my blog for a full review.
