In the woods of South Dakota, a white man named Sam has found refuge in an Indian reservation and attempts to drink away painful memories of a long-ago trauma. That’s about all I can tell you without giving anything away, except for the fact that this production is literally star-studded. Directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman and starring up-and-comer Tom Hardy, with equally brilliant set and light designs, the world premiere of The Long Red Road at the Goodman is worth seeing for all of the immense talent to be found under one roof.
Insider Info: Although slow at times, the play brings the audience along for the ride as it slowly, painfully unveils the horrific events of the past, the still-harsh realities of the future and finally, the heartbreaking climax. Although most known for his film roles, Philip Seymour Hoffman is also an accomplished theatre director in his own right, so you won’t find any first-time-director clumsiness here. And British film star Tom Hardy makes his U.S. theatre debut in a role written specifically for him – especially impressive given the back-country drawl he (believably) uses throughout the play.
