The Meat Puppets have been playing together off and on for 30 years. During that time, they have ingested unbelievably massive amounts of mind-altering substances. In fact, those same substances were responsible for bassist Cris Kirkwood ending up in prison a few years back, as well as for a variety of tragedies that would’ve left lesser bands in the dust. Cris and his brother Curt, as well as drummer Ted Marcus, put the pieces back together in 2006 and have been touring and releasing records ever since, including this year’s Sewn Together. Meandering, unaffected, and tautly rendered, Sewn Together finds the Puppets going back to their “cow punk” roots, a genre they continue to define.
Insider Info: Chicago plays home to the Puppets for a three night stint at Schubas from November 12-14. Each show has different supporting acts, including King Sparrow, Dynasty Electric, and the Dexateens, so there’s nothing wrong with going all three nights. In fact, I encourage it. There’s something about the undiluted geekery of seeing a band play on multiple nights in the same city that is both endearing and obsessive. But if you simply must attend only one night, go on Friday November 13, when both Dynasty Electric and Winston Audio are opening.
