Vivian Girls sound is at once a cacophonous, shoegazing wall of noise and a gentle throwback to poppy retro girl groups. They look like the latter, as the three girls that make up the band are indie darlings who write songs with simple yet enigmatic lyrics about love and heartbreak. Yet the tracks are purely punk, the sound is a nostalgic nod to post punk, but a riot grrrl DIY aesthetic is also undeniable. The Vivian Girls popped up a few years ago on the indie scene, and rather than slipping away they've managed to crank out one release after another and continuously tour, soaking up the alterna limelight they've earned. Check out their video for "When I'm Gone" for a proper taste.
Insider Info: If you want more, check out their video for Moped Girls--my bet is that it's about the girls in the budding Moped Army scene. This track especially I feel has a riot grrrl throwback feel to it, very Bratmobile-esque. But the punk rock in riot grrrl bands like Bratmobile wasn't washed over, like it is in VG. Which has me wondering if a Vivian Girls show could hold a mosh-pit, or if we are just to expect a lot of too-cool slight swaying back and forth. Break out the elbows and find out!
