11th Annual Irish Film Festival @ Beverly Art Center

The Culture-Vulture Way to Gear up for St. Paddy's

Recommended by Katie Fanuko

This time of year, most Chicagoans associate the city’s Beverly neighborhood with a raucous (and now defunct) St. Paddy’s Day Parade but there are also a number of lesser-known cultural events taking place like the 11th Annual Irish Film Festival. From March 5th through March 10th, the Beverly Art Center will be showcasing a sample of Ireland’s best feature films, documentaries, animations and shorts that have been featured at Cannes and Sundance. On March 5th, the festival’s opening reception will highlight a series of short films.

Insider Info: Since 2000, the Irish Film Festival has been a Beverly staple leading up to St. Patrick’s Day festivities. For those who are not familiar with the neighborhood, the film festival provides a perfect excuse to make an excursion south. After the film, consider getting a bite to eat at Leona’s (11060 S. Western Ave.) or a nearby pub like Cork and Kerry’s (10614 S. Western Ave.) and get a better sense of what the neighborhood is like sans 350,000 inebriated revelers.
