Pysanka Ukrainian Easter Egg Workshop

Painted Eggs as Art

Recommended by Rachel White

Ukranian Easter eggs are called Pysankas, and they are not your typical easter basket fare. Each egg is a tiny piece of art. The word Pysanka comes from Pysata which means to write, as the designs of the eggs are not painted but written on the eggs with beeswax. According to Wiki "The Hutsuls––Ukrainians who live in the Carpathian Mountains of western Ukraine––believe that the fate of the world depends upon the pysanka. As long as the egg decorating custom continues, the world will exist." That might be a pretty strong sell, but I like this tradition because it is rich, a rite of spring and pure eyecandy.

Insider Info: The teacher of this workshop, Vera Samycia is a fantastic Pysanka artist and will teach the workshop at the Ukrainian National Museum. With a limited number per workshop you'll get personal instruction in the ancient technique of wax resist, you'll learn more about the symbolism, you'll have a beautiful finished Pysanka by the end of the day and a delicious lunch is included.
